TUAW Tip: Apple TV, iPod and more can sync photos from Aperture

Since I committed to stepping up to Aperture from iPhoto, I've been slowly learning that Aperture really isn't left out in the cold in terms of integrating with other applications or syncing photos to devices like the iPod and Apple TV. If you don't have Aperture installed, you simply won't see it as an option in things like Apple's system-wide Media Browser or iTunes for photo synching; that's what caught me, since I've been running my entire iTunes library on an older iMac downstairs, and Aperture on my MacBook Pro. Today I decided to tinker with a few things by plugging an iPod into my MacBook Pro, and suddenly I caught this option in iTunes for Aperture. This setting also appears in the sync options for the Apple TV as well, and works just as you expect; you can chose to sync your entire photo library, or you can pick and chose albums (or Projects, as they're called in Aperture), complete with image counts for every album in the list.

This should be great news for anyone who, like me, previously thought Aperture couldn't play with all the system-wide integration that iPhoto enjoys.

this aperture sorting problem appears to be a system-wide issue. it shows up in the ilife and iwork media browser and in the iphone which makes slideshows on it pretty unusable. too bad.

#6 I, too, have the same problem... jumbled order when viewing images from Aperture on Apple TV. Have you figured anything out to correct?

Albums and projects are two different things in Aperture, and you can only synchronize your entire library or albums (smart and normal ones), not projects.

You also have to enable the previews as well, either automatically or manually, since RAW files are not useable by an iPod or an AppleTV (and what would be the point ?)

So if you feel that some of your pictures are not being synchronized, check that they are in an album (within a project, or not) and that they have a preview.

I have not synced my Aperture Library to iPhoto but I found that my iPhoto RAW files were being ignored by my AppleTV, so #8 you may be correct.

How about anyone with RAW files in iPhoto?

@ #3: Why would you want AppleTV to recognize RAW files? It grabs the previews created by Aperture.

I found that synching Aperture photos to iPod via iTunes jumbled the order of the gallery so had to switch to iPhoto to keep galleries in the right order (when the order matters, e.g. a set of Keynote slides).

Also the gallery selection would randomly be forgotten so after a synch the Aperture galleries would disappear from the iPod, whereas iPhoto synching seems to stick.

Anyone have a fixes for these so that I don't have to use iPhoto?

i currently use both iPhoto and Aperture and what i wish is that you could sync BOTH libraries to the iPod (or ï£¿TV) at the same time.

(I use iPhoto for photos from Mail, the internet, and other people's cameras; and Aperture with my own SLR.)
